Doctor Rank had said that Krogstad was a case of ââ¬Å"moral afflictionâ⬠and that the man was ââ¬Å"rotten to the coreâ⬠. The Doctor said so because Krogstad had at one time been guilty of a serious moral lapse. In that context Mrs. Christine Lind also told Nora that Krogstad had at one time been a solicitorââ¬â¢s clerk in her native town and that he was most probably a widower now. Nora had confirmed that he was a widower with a large number of children. Krogstadââ¬â¢s Past Friendship with Helmer and his Past Love Affair with Christine Krogstad had been a boyhood friend of Helmerââ¬â¢s. When, therefore, Helmer is appointed the manager of the bank where Krogstad is working, Krogstad speaks to him in a familiar manner. Krogstad had though t that Helmer would show due regard for their past friendship. However, he feels disappointed when he finds Helmer to be quiet indifferent to him. Also, Krogstad and Christine were lovers in the past and expected to get married. However, Christine had been compelled by circumstances to marry somebody else. Krogstad had than been bitterly disappointed and disturbed. The two meet later on when Krogstad is a widower and Mrs. Lind a widow. A Letter Dropped by him into Helmerââ¬â¢s Letter-Box When Krogstad, contrary to his hope receives from Helmer the order of dismissal, from his post in the bank, he feels furious and meets Nora to make her intervene on his behalf with Helmer. He then tells her that he had been leading an upright life in order to make amends for his moral lapse in the past and his efforts to rebuild a good image of himself would receive a setback if her husband was to persist in his order of dismissal. He had therefore written a letter to Helmer informing him of Nora ââ¬â¢s guilt of forging her fatherââ¬â¢s signatures, and telling him to withdraw his order of dismissal or face a public exposure of her wifeââ¬â¢s guilt. Krogstad then drops that letter into Helmerââ¬â¢s letter-box. Ready to Accept Mrs. Lindeââ¬â¢s Offer of Marriage When Mrs. Linde goes to meet Krogstad in order to persuade him to withdraw his incriminating letter which still lies in Helmerââ¬â¢s letter-box, the talk between them naturally turns to their past love affair. Mrs. Linde explains why she married a rich man and gave up Krogstad. Mrs. Lind then proposes marriage to him. Her offer to marry Krogstad turns out to be a windfall for him, an unexpected piece of good fortune, and he is overjoyed. However, he makes it a point to certify that Mrs. Linde genuinely want to marry him, irrespective of being aware of his questionable past, not merely to save her friend. His Repentance and his Second Letter When Mrs. Linde has assured him that she wishes to marry him f or his sake, and even more for her sake, he offers to withdraw his letter containing his threat to Helmer to make a public disclosure of his wifeââ¬â¢s criminal act of forgery. Outsourcing American Jobs to Foreign Countries Case Study
Outsourcing American Jobs to Foreign Countries - Case Study Example Likewise, this same report indicates the unemployment rate has hit an all-time low at 5.6 percent. This information is supported by another report produced by the Labor Department (2006) indicating that American has only lost an average of 7.71 million jobs every quarter. Based on this information, Forrester Research has estimated that the worst case scenario would have America losing approximately 3.3 million service jobs in the period from 2000 to 2015. Calculating the math, these figures show an average of 55,000 jobs lost to outsourcing each quarter, which only comprises approximately 0.71 percent of all available jobs in America. Citing research conducted for Aviva, Insley indicated only 28 per cent of the respondents to a survey felt lower costs due to foreign call centers would lead to lower premiums for American consumers while a majority of respondents indicated that service provided was not up to the standards expected.

Antigone by Sophocles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Antigone by Sophocles - Essay Example The ancient Greek play Antigone, written around 442 BC by the famous dramatist Sophocles, has become one of the worldââ¬â¢s classics and has been widely published, performed and adapted in many languages and formats across the world. It is a memorable play, characterized by a background of death and destruction, and the strong figures of Antigone and Creon, who are locked in opposition over what is to be done with the dead body of Antigoneââ¬â¢s brother Polyneices. Major themes like the duty of a statesman (Creon) to protect his citizens against traitors, the duty of a woman (Antigone) to honor her relatives with a decent burial, and the duty of all to respect the gods are developed in the play. The various characters are depicted taking up positions which demonstrate a number of different heroic qualities. In the opening scene Ismene appears to be timid and she hides behind her gender to avoid facing up to the conflict that is presented to her by Antigone: ââ¬Å"We must remember that by birth weââ¬â¢re women,/and as such, we shouldnââ¬â¢t fight with menâ⬠Ismene realizes that she has a duty to bury her brother, but her approach is to back away from that and rely on the mercy of the gods and the dead: ââ¬Å"So Iââ¬â¢ll ask those underground for pardonâ⬠. Ismene is concerned above all with her image as a woman, and she is very aware of how her actions will make her appear to other people. She wants to be seen as a perfect woman, meek and obedient: ââ¬Å"But I canââ¬â¢t act against the state.... Ismene cannot face up to life alone, and so she speaks out of weakness, and a desire to suffer death in order to spare herself still more suffering later. The lowly Guard is the character who most clearly operates solely in his own best interests. He is afraid of Creon, with good reason, because he knows that he has failed in his duty to watch over the corpse of Polyneices and could face very severe consequences, even death, if he does not make good his error. He has news for Creon, but makes sure that he communicates his concern about his own fate first: ââ¬Å"Guard: I want to tell you first about myself./ I did not do it. And I didnââ¬â¢t see/the one who did. So it would be unjust/if I should come to grief.â⬠(Antigone, lines 275- 277). This pleading makes him look like an unruly child, trying to explain away his conduct in front of an angry father. He also tries to spread the blame amongst his colleagues saying ââ¬Å"Every one of us was responsible./but none of us was cl early in the wrong.â⬠(Antigone, lines 301-302). He did not volunteer to be the bringer of bad news, but was chosen by ââ¬Å"the luck of the drawâ⬠(Antigone, line 317) which shows that he is at the mercy of fate, and just following what he has to do, rather than making a moral decision about it. The first instinct that he has is to run away from his job and save his own life. He is not particularly loyal to his employer, but just wants to save his own skin. In the end he sees a chance to redeem himself, and keep his job, by offering up the woman he has caught in the act of burying the corpse. The way that he keeps changing his mind shows that he is willing to act opportunistically, based on whatever
